Firm Attorney Publishes Article on Criminal Pleas for Foreign Citizens

Virginia Carstens, as Associate with the firm, recently published an article in Connecticut Lawyer magazine, entitled The Pitfalls of Community Court Criminal Proceedings for Foreign Citizens in Connecticut. The magazine, a publication of the Connecticut Bar Association, is distributed to over ten thousand lawyers.

In the article, Carstens warned members of the bar that they need to take care in handling foreign citizens in criminal court. She pointed out that the "collateral consequences" of a dismissed criminal charge can often prevent a foreign citizen from obtaining status as a U.S. Citizen through naturalization. In the article, she also suggests that even where a foreign citizen is charged with a minor criminal offense, it is useful to have assistance of immigration counsel prior to making an appearing in state court.
